About the Fairtree Graduate Programme

The Fairtree Graduate Programme is an exciting opportunity for graduates to gain experience and grow at our multi-asset firm and learn first-hand from our investment professionals.

The Fairtree Graduate Programme is a bespoke 12-month training programme designed for graduates to broaden their skills base, including technical and soft skills development, and kick-start their careers in the asset management industry. 

The 12-month graduate programme will commence in January 2023, with shorter periods or delayed starts considered for exceptional cases.The relevant qualifications, competencies, attributes and fit with the team and the Fairtree culture are critical.

Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • South African citizenship.
  • A valid SA driver’s license is essential.
  • EE candidates are preferred.

Qualifications:

Risk Intern:

  • Bachelor’s degree with Investments, Actuarial, Finance or Statistics as the major subjects. Coding skills are preferred but not essential. 

Solutions Intern:

  • B.Comm specialising in Investments, Maths, Statistics, or Actuarial.
  • or B.Sc in Physics or Maths

Operations Intern:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Investments or Finance with Accounting as major subject.
  • Hons / Postgrad diploma would be preferred.
  • Specific interest in middle office operations (controls over security transaction processing and checking the integrity of portfolio management system).

Marketing Intern:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

Competencies and attributes:

  • A track record of excellence, including strong academic performance.
  • An interest in business and investments.
  • Strong numerical ability.
  • A questioning nature and an analytical mind.
  • Being a team player.
  • Self-starter with a proactive can-do attitude.

will allow it to support the increase in business demand.

 

Role function

  • Position within the operation team, principally as an Operations Analyst.
  • The Operations Analyst will report into the Operations Manager who reports into the Chief Operating Officer.
  • The purpose of the role is to contribute to and promote robust operating procedures across the investment management business to create an efficient, responsive and process driven operations team.
  • Relevant qualifications and experience and fit with the current team critical and would override particular demographic background, however EE candidate preferred.
  • Due to processing required for meeting market deadlines, the hours of this role may start early at 7am and end earlier, or start later and finish late at 7pm.

Qualifications and experience

  • Appropriate finance qualification, BCom (Hons) preferred.
  • Experience with reconciliations and cash management.
  • Self-driven with 2-5 years working in operations in the fund management industry.
  • Knowledge of working with custodians would be advantageous.
  • Strong communicator and team player.
  • Relevant computer skills and system experience. Experience in a programming language would be advantageous, but not required.

Role outputs

  • Contribute to and promote robust operating procedures across the investment management business to create an efficient, responsive and process driven operations team.
  • Improve business understanding of operations processes and procedures.
  • Establish and promote enhanced business processes that ensure efficient and effective stakeholder delivery within set expectations and agreed performance standards in the area of accountability and the overall optimisation of the value chain for the business, including:
    • Performance of reconciliations.
    • Exception handling. Investigation of significant variances and effective resolution of reconciliation breaks and ad hoc challenges.
    • Monitoring of the operations mailbox and timeous execution of stakeholder requests.
    • Take responsibility for daily operational activities.
    • Liaise with stakeholders, run daily operational activities, receive and execute requests timeously.
    • Ensure timeous and correct recording of transactions.
    • Liaise with stakeholders to keep them fully appraised of the progress of queries.
  • Reconciliation of trade and fund dealing activity, corporate action and Proxy voting management, cash management and spot FX instruction, reconciliation of cash, positions and performance.

  • Share and transfer product, process and systems knowledge to colleagues.
  • Collaborate and work with internal teams to deliver required service levels.
  • Ensure achievement of own performance objectives.

About the role

 

Our expert team of investment professionals manage *R125bn in award-winning portfolios in multiple asset classes, hedge funds, unit trusts and private equity. In line with expanding our global capabilities, we are looking for a Global Equity Analyst to join our team of investment professionals.

 

The role reports to our Portfolio Managers, who report directly to our Group CEO. The relevant qualifications, experience, and fit with the team and the Fairtree culture are critical and override demographic backgrounds, although EE and/or female candidates are preferred.

 

Requirements

 

Qualifications:

  • Bcom Honours Degree / CA(SA) or equivalent.
  • CFA charter holder.

 

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in equity analysis and asset management.
  • Technically proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Extensive financial modelling skills and experience.
  • Experience in a programming language would be advantageous but not required.
  • Willingness to obtain additional qualifications if required.
